The Dragon of Grandiosity

MINNESOTA MEN'S CONFERENCE 2003

We could say that the dragon can be compared to that little bit of grandiosity we have in ourselves. But we can see what happens when a country becomes too grandiose. How can we participate in dragon power without encouraging it to kill thousands of people? Robert Moore will be with us for three talks on this subject.

The Grandiose One in us has a twin – the twin of Utter Worthlessness. We will try to notice during the week how one rarely appears without the other.

Robert Moore has some great new work on what he calls the Dragon of Grandiosity. Grandiosity can be dangerous, but it also lifts us into great areas of energy. He notices that Beowulf, representing the Western point of view, died fighting the undersea dragon. The Chinese, by contrast, on New Year’s Day walk along lighting firecrackers, encouraging and amusing the dragon.

Malidoma Somé will bring the broad genius of the Dagara’s indigenous culture and it's equivalent of the dragon energy called purpose and greatness. He will also be available in the design and practice of rituals appropriate to the event.

Robert Bly will be telling the story this year and reading new translations of Hafez and Rumi. Doug Von Koss will encourage dragon breath by singing exercises in the early morning, and Miguel Rivera will bring his massive wit and good will and participate in the storytelling and in the creation of appropriate rituals.

Tom Gambell, considered by many to be the most innovative Aikido master in the United States, will help bring his understanding and Aikido techniques to help ground the Dragon energy in our bodies.

This will be an amazing week with such gifted and talented teachers.

Making a Home for the Soul:
Protection and Talismanic Medicine

Cost: $200 / $170 for Continuum members

Modern culture has not been hospitable to the indigenous soul, the most authentic and genuine reflection of who we are. We often fell assaulted by the barrage of negativity, violence, and superficiality so prevalent with this society. In the presence of this onslaught we yearn for true measures to safeguard our essential self from these chronic conditions. In the absence of tangible protection we take refuge by living at the edges of the world, sending our souls in exile and homelessness. We become hyper vigilant, constantly assessing how far we can venture into the world without damage. With little support to be who we are, we find ourselves existing in an ever-widening gap between what we sense we are capable of accomplishing and what we actually achieve. Gradual erosion occurs in our feeling of value and we are increasingly focused solely on our failures while our gifts remain hidden. Even our will to succeed and transcend our limitations falls short.

Drawing on the indigenous concepts of protection and talismanic medicine, this intensive training offers us the opportunity to develop tools to help make a home for the soul. This traditional technology allows us to enter the stream of life where beauty and mystery of the world can move into us. Among the areas to be explored over this 2-3 day training will be learning how to deflect and dissipate the energies of negativity, how to stay connected within the protective field of spirit and the ancestors and how to create talismans that concretely offer us soul protection.

Knowing that each of us carries the capacity to make a home for the soul restores a sense of power and dignity so necessary for meaningful life. Through ritual, teaching, the creation of talismans, and shared community, we will work to create a homecoming for the soul. This is essential wisdom for anyone concerned with reclaiming his or her indigenous nature. - Malidoma Somé
