	Courting the Ancient Ear: Creating both a spoken and a written language of deep listening in service to the wild nature and subtle layers of the Big Picture February 16th-23rd, 2003 at Ojo Caliente, New Mexico While trying to praise an artist for his or her ability, I’ve heard people talk about how well an artist ‘captures a scene,’ or ‘forces the words to work for them,’ or how they ‘nailed an idea,’ or ‘exhausted a tortured subject.’ This is the language of warfare, mining and conquest. If culture is a spiritual thing and is defined by the way we speak, then our present language is killing us. People lost in fear on all sides of a fracas end up wanting to “fix” the world talking ‘final solutions’ with frustrated war metaphors instead of courageously listening to the Story the Big Picture is telling with one eye weeping and the other laughing. Nonetheless, a story is only as good as the ears that hear it. Deep inside us all, back in time, hiding beneath a hard ledge of man-made amnesia and nature-hating rationalism, an Ancient Listening ear still waits. Shaped just right to hear the entire story that the Holy invisible is constantly speaking, this wonderful old Ear extends beyond each of us at a safe distance inside the ground. It is there that hopeful seeds of unborn sound wait for the reinvention of an Indigenous listening culture to sprout forth. This Old Mother Ear is a great hatcher of language and understandings for a time beyond our own. That ear is not there only for us to be heard, it is there for us to hear with: our indigenous listening. We must allow ourselves to hear with it, for only then can we begin to speak and maybe even write the rare eloquence of grief and praise the world so desperately needs in order to survive beyond the jaded imagination, martial numbness and cynical complacency of our own era, into a cultural flowering consistent with the imagination of the Great Holy in Nature. –Martín Prechtel

	Come join the winter writer's workshop, February 16th-23rd, 2003 with Martín Prechtel, author of Secrets of the Talking Jaguar, Long Life, Honey in the Heart The Disobedience of the Daughter of the Sun: Ecstasy and Time and the newest book: The Toe Bone and the Tooth being released Feb. 1st, 2003. Possible subjects covered by Martín at his Winter Writer’s Workshop:	Martín Prechtel For the last couple of years Martín Prechtel, author of “Secrets of the Talking Jaguar” and “Long Life, Honey in the Heart,” has been conducting very successful creative writing workshops where the prose writer, non-writer, poet, and lovers of spiritual literacy can all come together, learn from each other and Martín. Martín Prechtel, an author, teacher, and shaman, was raised in New Mexico on a Pueblo Indian reservation. In 1971 Nicholas Chiviliu, an aging Mayan shaman from Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala called Martín to become his student. Martín lived with Chiviliu for years, was initiated as a shaman and after his teacher’s death, succeeded him, healing and shamanizing among 30,000 Tzutujil Mayans in his new found village. After 1978 Martín became chief initiator and a public leader, guiding the young men through long ceremonies.

Workshop will end no later than 11 am on Sunday, Feb 23th Schedule: Martin will teach for several hours each day - but the times will vary. However there will be plenty of time to enjoy the Hot Springs and natural beauty of the area. Lodging and Food We have reserved all of the cottages and hotel rooms at the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort at greatly reduced rates. The cost for a cottage is $80/night ( single or double occupancy) plus tax for workshop participants. Hotel rooms are available at $54/night plus tax for single occupancy, $70/night plus tax for double occupancy.
