What will Heal the Wounded King?

The Minnesota Men’s Conference was started by Robert Bly. This first conference, as well as all the ones following, has included the telling of old stories, the gift of poetry, the making of music together, and the opening of hearts to grief, which sometimes happens when men who trust each other gather together for a few days.  In the last few years we have begun to ask that men who have received some of the honey of old stories and soul teaching give some of the sweetness back to younger men.  So again this year we’ll be inviting a dozen or so young men between the ages of 13 and 20 to attend the conference.  If you would like to sponsor one of these young men, that would be even better.

During this year’s conference we will continue the telling and discussion of the Middle Ages story of Parzival, whose name means "piercing the vale" or "going down the center of the valley."  We began working on the story last year; this year we will go back over early events for those who couldn’t, because of the September 11th disaster, arrive.

Basically it’s the story of how an oafish boy can become a warrior and then a lover and then someone capable in participating in the rituals of grief.  He goes through the "red stage", then into the white of thoughtfulness, and finally into the state of adulthood, which corresponds, because of the grief in it, to the color black.  The famous Fisher King is in this story, the one who is wounded in the genital area.  During the procession in the Grail Castle, the Fisher King can be healed if Parzival remembers to ask one certain question.  If he forgets, the Waste Land closes in once more, and we are back in pop culture and the pain we all know about.

Much of the passion of these old lovers has been inherited by flamenco.  Vicente Griego will sing flamenco this year to our great delight, and all of us   will have a chance to receive instruction in these complicated rhythms, which we learn in a group through clapping and singing.  We can also expect to do some work in the woods again.  Those who enjoy martial arts will have a chance to learn this art with a teacher.  John Lee will bring his jokes and his advice on avoiding emotional catastrophe.  We will have a night of singing as usual.  The Minnesota Sufi clan has learned a new poem of Hafez as sung by Shahram Nazeri, and they will teach that.  Doug Von Koss will recite Lawrence’s poem on whale lovemaking this year for sure, and will lead the early morning wake-up singing.  We are delighted that Miguel Rivera will be with us again, and he will teach drumming so please bring a drum if you have one or can steal one.  Martín Prechtel and Robert Bly will tell the Parzival story.  Martín will tell us what he has learned this past year, and Robert will tell us what he has forgotten, and will recite a few new Abraham poems written this year.  Hopefully Martín will read a chapter or two from his new, unpublished book.  Please do come and bring friends.

The Teachers

Robert Bly, an award winning author and extraordinary poet, will give several talks, and moderate discussions, in his unique and thought provoking ways. He will lead the evening of Sufi singing and poetry, and will read from his acclaimed new book of poems, "The Night Abraham Called to the Stars." He received the McKnight Distinquished Artist Award given by the McKnight Foundation in Minnesota a few years ago.

Martín Prechtel will return to the conference this year, telling ancient stories, and share his knowledge learned from his experiences as ritualist and initiator of men among the Tzutujil Maya of Guatemala.

John Lee has committed 20 years of his life to helping people live richer and fuller lives by teaching them to release the emotions trapped inside their bodies. His insightful wisdom and unique exercises will help you in your relationships, work environment, and life in general.

Miguel Rivera, a musician and drummer, is a man who is in love with the language of sound. A regular teacher at this conference since 1993 it is always an honor to have Miguel teach drumming, read poetry, and assist Martín in leading rituals and reaching out to new particpants.

Doug von Koss returns again this year to lead early morning chanting circles explore the sung and spoken Languages of the Heart from many world cultures and spiritual traditions.

Vicente Griego will join us this year, and will sing and teach flamenco, a tradition that has inherited and preserved the living passion of the old mythologically alive cultures. All will have a chance to learn some of the complicated rhythms as we clap and support the singing.
